How to Navigate Complex Emotions Around Mother’s Day – April 2026
March 31, 2026
In 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson legislated Mother’s Day as a holiday on the second Sunday in May in dedication to “the best mother in the world, your mother” (Stonehill, 2026). The range of emotions experienced around Mother’s Day is unique to one’s personal journey (Sage Therapy House, 2024). For some, the anticipation of Mother’s Day can bring joy, excitement, and gratitude. However, it can also bring sadness, anger, grief, resentment, and guilt for others if one has a painful relationship with their mother or is experiencing uncertainty with their health, physical distance, reduced mental capacity, problematic substance use, emotional disconnection, or fertility challenges (2024).
